NICARAGUA, Central America
The reason to note "Central America" is because some packages have
accidentally traveled to Nigeria, if you can believe it!
NEVER SEND MONEY in packages or
letters to Nicaragua! Someone may be tempted to intercept the mail and none
of it will get through.
If you
want to send a package, avoid excessive postage costs for you and customs
nightmares
for your students by keeping your packages under
4 pounds and 42 inches (length plus girth).
Gifts that fit in large, padded envelopes are your best bet.
Do NOT send extravagant gifts. Though the desire to do so is
understandable, such gifts cause envy and ill will. Letters and bright greeting cards are always welcome.
DO send them photos of yourself; it makes you real to them! An easy
gift is to include some colorful stickers in the envelope. They
adore them.
Party favors that are sold in multiples are inexpensive fun
and shared! Other ideas: colorful note paper, pretty
pencils or pens; jackets, socks, sweaters and T-shirts (check out
the selection and value at secondhand stores); and dolls! Girls under
10 like baby dolls and little-girl dolls. Consider career/fashion dolls for
older girls.
Be aware that these youngsters - indeed their families
- have
probably never received anything in the mail before, nor have
they ever sent anything, so be patient. Realize that this will
be a learning experience for them and you.

NIGHTMARES for your student. Gifts that fit in large, padded

Higher-ed students receive a stipend even during breaks. They often
have practicums to accomplish, and almost always have transportation
and other costs, including clothes. (Elementary and high school students
wear uniforms. Older students need to buy decent street clothes.)
Please note that higher-ed costs can vary depending on where and what
the student is studying! |
